NOTES:

I have just bought G-BUXK from the buider, Gerry Smith, and will fly into Sywell, my home field as soon as the weather permits and will hanger it with my AA5. Unfortunatly I will be away on the 20th May, but would like news of any future gaterings. I am interested in joining the association, any info you can give me would be helpful.

An eventful delivery flight...

I eventually managed to get the Piet off the ground last month, I had waited two months for the fields at both ends to be dry enough to allow me to fly her back. Because of the foot & mouth problem, the farmer at Milson did not want any aircraft to land, however he agreed that I could take off. I was slightly worried that there was no drop in rpm when selecting carb heat but was assured that this was normal and that no problems had arisen before.

Half way home I saw a slight drop in revs, applied carb heat but revs continued to drop. I called Wellesbourne on a hand held radio and declared an emergency. I faintly heard my call sign being repeated and with the field in sight I transmitted blind that I was coming in. At about one mile the engine died completely so my first landing was dead stick on concrete. No problem until I got down to about ten knots at which point, with no slipstream, I lost directional control and did a gentle 360 degree ground loop.

The fire crew were on the scene immediately and on looking under the cowl told me that my radiator was leaking, impressive for an air cooled engine. In fact water was pouring out of the carb as the ice melted. The tower were great and refused to charge a landing fee. They even pointed out that it was Friday the 13th! I rented a box van and brought her home to my workshop the next day. The problem was that the filter/heat box was incorrectly designed, the dump hole was left uncovered on the carb side when hot air was selected.

You will see a photograph in the next GASIL. I intend to do some re-building before I take her to Sywell.
