Engine progress

Nov 2002

Finally got her on her wheels! She wil need to come back down again pre-covering, but it has been well worth the effort to see some progress! More info:Under Carriage Progress

May 2002

Having looked at last May's update, it's frightening how little I've progressed! Oh well onwards and upwards! Eventually!?*

Have finally gone for a set of wheels......MATCO 600 X 6 with a spacer (F600) to take 800 X 6 Air Tracs. Also got the tubes direct from MATCO. £370 for the wheels and spacers, about £100 for the tyres and £30 ish for the tubes.

More on the undercarriage on the Northants Piet Group page

Weight: 18.5 lbs (wheel + spacer + tube + tyre + brake) 10 lbs of that just for the tyre!

I will still go with my original plan to fabric the undercarriage legs a la Piper Cub. I think this gives a more solid look, particularly with the 'balloon' tyres.

Spent hours on the fairing strip and filler strips!!! I am sure that it will need more attention pre-covering for that 'smooth' finish!

Nov Dec 2001

Still using the 'Airbus Course' as an excuse for lack of progress!

Managed a bit of 'Window Dressing' and mounted the c-section on the fitted cabane struts...

Fitted the tailwheel...used an A S & S homebuilders special, mounted on a 'beefed' up rear fuz apex. It will be fully steerable, as contrary to my first thoughts, I'll need all the help I can get to keep her straight!

In need of a bit of progress to keep the enthusiasm!!!!

Oct 2001

Not been a great month for progress...Following the tragic events of Sept 11 BA decided to retire the 747 Classic and post me to the Airbus A319/320. So it's taking up most of my time at the moment!

After a fair amount of 'faffing' I finally came up with a workable method of applying even pressure around the coaming. I have to admit to improvised knots, but the rope and pipe lagging appeared to have done the job!! I have put a second layer of ply around the inside 'lip' which has given the whole coaming a very solid feel.

Currently waiting for the undercart to come back from James the welder...still hope to have her 'rolling' on a pair of A S & S wheels by the years end! Northants Undercart Group
